What Is PFOA?

PFOA is an artificial chemical that dates back to the 1940s. Its acronym stands for perfluorooctanoic acid, created in a lab to aid in the product of resistant coatings against oil, water, stains, and heat.

Such products include non-stick cookware, ski wax, firefighting foams, and paper and cardboard for food packaging. Unfortunately, while the products have gone on to make our lives undoubtedly easier, the chemical PFOA hasn’t.

During the production of these items, the PFOA burns away and doesn’t remain a part of the finished product. However, PFOA lives in the environment surrounding the manufacturing plant for many years after its use in the production process.

Is PFOA Harmful?

PFOA is an incredibly stable chemical. While this bodes well in production, it does not bode well for the environment – or the people in it.

PFOA does not react with other chemicals; It takes a very long time to break down once in the environment. That is why it stays in the groundwater and soil surrounding a manufacturing plant.

There’s the kicker: PFOA gets into the groundwater – and stays there.

Studies regarding the harmful effects of PFOA are in their infancy. However, PFOA exposure has been linked to an increased risk of thyroid cancer, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, and bladder cancer. Therefore, further monitoring of those exposed to PFOA is necessary, and hopefully, we will see more concrete results soon.

How Are You Exposed to PFOA?

PFOA fell out of commercial use in the early 2000s. Thankfully, there isn’t any more PFOA being actively released into the environment and atmosphere. However, it is still found in the environment around production plants – soil and groundwater. It can also be found in people exposed to the chemical.

Those who have worked in producing resistant coating and related products are often found to have high levels of PFOA in their blood. The same high levels are found in those that live nearby. While these people are more at risk for complications of PFOA exposure, the PFOA does not stop there.

PFOA is also found in low levels in household dust, food, and often your drinking water.

How Does PFOA Get Into Our Drinking Water?

There aren’t any corporations actively dumping or draining chemicals in the Minnesotan water supply – it’s always been there. And unfortunately, it takes decades to break down in the environment.

What Measures Should You Take to Avoid PFOA Exposure?

Unfortunately, there has been an increased risk of exposure in Woodbury, Lake Elmo, and throughout the eastern Twin Cities suburbs. But fortunately, Croix Crystal Water Treatment has suitable water treatment systems to help protect your home from these harmful chemicals.

Discuss your needs and concerns with our experts. We truly have the best options to help you clean up your home’s water supply.

Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment

A reverse osmosis water treatment system is one of the most effective systems for removing PFOA from your home’s water supply. It works by establishing a semipermeable membrane that tap water filters through. The membrane removes impurities, making the water safer for drinking, cooking, and bathing.

Reverse osmosis water treatment improves the quality of your home’s water several times and allows you to be free from buying water, because it’ll taste that good. In addition, it has long been trusted to successfully remove contaminants from water, from PFOA to everything else.

Whole-House Filtration Water Treatment

A whole-house filtration system treats all the water that enters your home. With a whole-house filtration system, you get clean water accessible by faucets, showers, dishwashers, appliances, and more.

There are different types of whole-house water treatment systems, such as carbon filtration, iron filtration, and sulfur filtration. The lifespan of the filters in a whole house filtration system depends on size and maintenance.

Assuming it is well-maintained and your home is average size, you should change the filter every three to six months. Depending on the same factors, the tank may need to be replaced every few years.
